Kala Ramnath - The Singing Violin

"If Mozart had been transported to the South Asian subcontinent this is what he and improvised Western classical music might have sounded like. The comparison is not thrown in to befuddle or impress. Kala Ramnath is a musician of giant - like qualities" Maestro KALA RAMNATH, the contemporary torch bearer of the Mewati Gharana, stands today amongst the most outstanding instrumental musicians in the North Indian classical genre. Born into a family of prodigious musical talent, which has given Indian music such violin legends as Prof. T.N. Krishnan and Dr. N. Rajam, Kala's genius with the violin manifested itself from childhood. She began playing the violin at the tender age of three under the strict tutelage of her grandfather
Vidwan. Narayan Aiyar. Simultaneously she received training from her aunt Dr. Smt. N. Rajam. For fifteen years she put herself under the training of Mewati vocal maestro, Sangeet Martand Pandit Jasraj. This has brought a rare vocal emotionalism to her art. Kala's violin playing is characterized by an immaculate bowing and fingering technique, command over all aspects of laya, richness and clarity in sur. All this innate artistry and technical brilliance combined with a rare and exquisite emotional quality are the hallmarks of the style. She has completely revolutionized the technique of playing the violin by taking this instrument so close to vocal
music that today her violin is called "THE SINGING VIOLIN".

ILEANA CITARISTI- Odissi dancer

Italian by birth Ileana holds a Doctorate in Philosophy with a thesis on 'Psychoanalysis and eastern mythology'. She has come to Indian dance after years of experience in the traditional as well as experimental theatre in Europe.
Ileana has been living in Orissa, India, since the year 1979 in close contact with the people, their language and culture. Her mentor in the Odissi dance style is the renown Guru, Padma Vibhushan Kelucharan Mohapatra. He is equally at home with the different martial postures of the Chhau dance of Mayurbhanji which she has learnt under the guidance of Guru Shri Hari Nayak, obtaining the title of ‘Acharya’ from the Sangeet Mahavidyalya of Bhubaneswar in Orissa.

MEERA DAS- Odissi Dancer

Meera has been receiving rare reviews from discerning critics and admiration from audiences for her authentic renderings of the great Indian classical dance - ODISSI. Starting early in life, Meera had taken to dance and music rather instinctively. As a child-artiste, while she excelled in bandha Nrutya - a folk dance form involving acrobatic movements-- under the tutelage of Guru Gangadhar Nayak, it was the love of music that brought Meera to the Odissi Research Centre The intrinsic talents of Meera flourished under the great masters like Padmabhusan Kelucharan Mohapatra and Guru Gangadhar Pradhan. Soon Meera joined the chosen few of the Odissi repertoire company of the Odissi Research Centre to perform in many prestigious programmes
throughout the country. Sponsored by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations [ICCR], Meera has performed in North Korea in 1990 and in Germany during the Indian Festival 1992. She has also performed in Indonesia in the Festival of Kalinga Bali Yatra 1993. Now a distinguished name in the reference panel of artistes of ICCR, and also as a dance executive of the Odissi Research Centre, Meera is fully dedicated to her cultural mission. She is imparting advanced level training to groups of students while presenting Odissi recitals -- solo as well as with her troupe--in India and abroad..

SUJATA MOHAPATRA- Odissi dancer

One of the leading soloists of the country, Sujata is an accomplished and versatile Odissi artiste from Bhubaneshwar, Orissa. Disciple and daughter-in-law of the legendary Padma VibhushanGuru Kelucharan Mohapatra, her interest in dance was nurtured at an early age by her parents and she took to the stage even as a child. Intensively trained and groomed by her guru for more than eighteen years, she is the bearer of his priceless cultural heritage. Sujata has also undergone training at the Odissi Research Center in Bhubaneshwar and is currently guided and supported by
her husband Ratikant Mohapatra. Sujata has a compelling and arresting stage presence, with an exhilarating combination of intensity and spontaneity. Her dance is particularly noteworthy for her strict adherence to her guru's style and vision. Her lyrical movements perfectly epitomize the grace and technical perfection of the Kelucharan Mohapatra gharana and her depth of expression is evocative and moving.
Widely traveled over the world as a soloist and a leading member of the Srjan Dance Troupe, she has also been a leading dancer in most of her guru's great choreographies. Apart from her concert tours Sujata is also a much sought after teacher. Currently she is the principal of Srjan, the institute founded by Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra for imparting training in Odissi and also often conducts workshops in the major centers of Odissi teaching throughout India and abroad. In
addition to her training in Odissi, Sujata holds a Master's Degree in Oriya literature from Utkal University and has extensively researched temple architecture relating to the dance form.

Guru Sri Ram Hari Das- Classical music

Guru Sri Ram Hari Das was born in Balesore, Orissa and is a dedicated student of (late) Sangeet Sudhakar Sri Balakrishna Das. SPICMACAY

"India is the cradle of human race , the birthplace of human speech , the mother of history , the grandmother of legend , and the great grandmother of tradition . So far as I am able to judge , nothing has been left undone , either by man or nature , to make India the most extraordinary country that the sun visits on his rounds."

These were the words of one of the wisest of men , Mark Twain , which makes our hearts swell with pride when we remember we were born in this land where the greatest of minds were cultivated. In an attempt to uphold this great culture , SPICMACAY , the society for the promotion of Indian classical music and culture amongst youth , has been working relentlessly from the day of its establishment to this day , to generate awareness among the youth about the treasure left behind for us by our forefathers.

SPICMACAY was established by Dr. Kiran Seth in 1977 at IIT Delhi and now it has some 200 chapters around the world and holds over 1500 events anually. The organisation spreads its message through various events which include lecture demonstrations by the artists , fests ,Baithaks , Viraasat ( a week long festival comprising of performances in classical and folk arts , literature , crafts etc..), yoga camps and conventions.
